What’s the difference between a wire transfer and an ACH payment?

A wire transfer is an electronic payment that occurs between two banks. The payments do not have to go through a clearinghouse, so the payment can happen immediately. They are often used for large payments so that the seller is confident they will receive their money.

An ACH payment stands for automated clearinghouse payment. In this case, the funds move from one bank to another financial institution, but this time they go through a clearinghouse to process them. The clearinghouse moves all payments at the same time, and then the receiving financial institution processes them to get to the proper accounts. This method can take one to three days for funds to transfer.

Here are the main differences:

  • Wire transfers are immediate; ACH transfers take a few days
  • Wire transfers require a fee; ACH do not or cost less
  • Wire transfers are initiated and processed by financial institutions; ACH payment process automatically
  • ACH payments can be more secure
  • For wire transfers, only the sender can initiate the transfer

The International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is an international standard of identifying bank accounts across national borders with a minimal risk of propagating transcription errors. An IBAN is required for beneficiary accounts in Europe and other countries around the world.
